Paint Finishes

Choose sheen by balancing appearance, surface condition, and everyday use.

Paint color receives most of the attention, but finish changes how light reflects, how easily a surface shows detail, and how practical cleaning may be. Product lines vary, so treat these categories as guidance rather than universal rules.

Flat and matte

Lower reflection can create a calm appearance.

Flat and matte finishes are commonly considered for ceilings and lower-contact walls because they reflect less light and may soften the appearance of minor surface variation. Cleanability and burnishing resistance depend heavily on the specific product.

They may be less practical where frequent scrubbing, splashing, or repeated contact is expected.

Eggshell and satin

A middle range for appearance and practical maintenance.

Eggshell and satin finishes provide more reflection than flat or matte and are often considered for living spaces, hallways, kitchens, baths, and other walls that may need easier cleaning.

The names are not perfectly standardized between manufacturers. One brand’s eggshell may look closer to another brand’s satin, so evaluate the actual product rather than the label alone.

Semi-gloss and gloss

Higher reflection emphasizes both durability needs and preparation quality.

Semi-gloss is commonly considered for trim, doors, cabinets, and surfaces that receive frequent contact or cleaning. Gloss provides even more reflection and can create a strong design effect.

Higher sheen reveals texture, brush or roller variation, repairs, and surface defects more readily. Preparation and application quality become especially noticeable.

Match finish to the room

Consider use, light, cleaning, and the existing surface.

  • How often will the surface be touched or cleaned?
  • Will moisture, cooking residue, or splashing be present?
  • Does the room receive strong natural or directional light?
  • How smooth and consistent is the surface?
  • Should trim stand apart from walls or blend quietly?
  • How much reflection feels comfortable in the space?

Compare real samples

Small labels cannot fully predict a finished room.

View samples in the actual space under daytime and evening light. Compare them near fixed finishes and on more than one wall when possible.

Ask for product-specific guidance about cleaning, application, and cure. The finish category alone does not determine performance.
